  • Summer Collection 2010

UBUNTU – "I am because we are"
    Made in Africa

Known as a knitwear brand The Inoue Brothers have been searching to further their endeavors in creating relations in communities where craftsmanship and cultural heritages are rich. The communities found for their projects are purposely chosen for their less enriched history of financial stability and opportunity.
Progressing from their collaboration with the indigenous Andean knitters of Bolivia, the brothers have ventured to the township of KHAYELITSHA, South Africa. Here the Brothers have formed a relationship with a community and a co-operative of beading ladies. Using eco friendly organic hemp material as canvases for these beading pieces, the final garments are produced through an uncompromising process commissioning local artisans and seamstresses.

Collaborating with Gazelle and Créol Brothers for their collection, the spirit of “Ubuntu” is the message.

  • Mid Season 2009

Rare Photographic Exhibition at Front Room at St Martins Lane
Ltd. Edition Clothes Collection at DOVER STREET MARKET

Facilitating a first ever collaboration between The Inoue Brothers and  former confidante of the late downtown NYC artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, “The High Priest” Nicholas Taylor, a photographic exhibition Jean-Michel Basquiat through Nicholas Taylor, which will take place in Front Room.

Paying homage to the artist from a candid new perspective, the collection of photographs magnify a remarkable creative relationship between Taylor and Basquiat that emerged from experimental 1980s band GRAY consisting of Taylor, Basquiat, Michael Holman and Vincent Gallo, declared at the time by Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine as ‘possibly the best band on the planet’. Capturing the spirit of the late 70s and early 80s downtown NYC art scene, Front Room will house a unique collection of photographs shot by both Taylor and Basquiat with images from the Mudd club and GRAY performing at various venues in down town NYC.
In conjunction with the exhibition and to showcase the intrinsic link between art and fashion, the Inoue brothers have designed an exclusive clothing range which will be stocked in Dover St Market. Used as canvases, the collection incorporates classic styles from well known labels such as Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, Pendleton Woolen Mills and 1969 vintage Levi’s upon which The Inoue Brothers have employed discharge printing technique to bring the never before seen images to life. Each garment also has a written message originally drawn from Nick’s diary during his time with Basquiat.

  • Autumn & Winter 2009

In 2005 the brothers formed a unique collaboration which is still active today with the people of Bolivia to create hand-knitted Alpaca garments.
With sustainability and social responsibility as key values The Inoue Brothers are still working together with a network of traditional Bolivian knitters – artisan mothers working from home, unable to leave for a city job due to family commitments. Having established a working relationship with Comme des Garçons the line is available in their concept-store in the centre of London, Dover Street Market.
Through this collaboration an ever developing relationship with the Arco Iris foundation has formed. This government supported non-profit organisation in La Paz, Bolivia works with street teenagers to help them improve their lives. Their goal is to give teenagers support, hope and education so they can become independent, well-adjusted and self-sufficient citizens. The Inoue Brothers contribute to the Arco Iris Foundation by outsourcing the work of sewing labels and tags to the foundation workshop, and by ensuring a fair price for the labour.
These hand-knitted garments are the products of ordinary human decency and respect. They are of the finest craftsmanship and produced with pride and extraordinary skill by professional mothers.
