The main inspiration behind the Black Star graphic was the moment when Ghana lost against Uruguay in penalties in the World Cup quarter-final in 2010. The defeat was particularly difficult to witness after a controversial performance from Uruguay. This feeling of unjust defeat inspired us to celebrate the powerful and passionate spirit of Ghana’s national team, who are officially known as the Black Stars.
The design of the graphic itself is inspired by the strong symbolism of the Black Star represented in Marcus Garvey’s “The Black Star Line”, which was founded in 1919. A symbol promoting Pan-Africanism and African independence. The Black Star artwork is visualised by the overlay of three stars, each representing the three Rastafarian colours “red”, “gold”, and “green”.
